Samya started the meeting, reminding everyone she would be on vacation in July.  Samya told everyone about Toastmaster training (open to all members) at Genentech on August 9th and reminded the officers to attend training.  Aditi is the new VP of Public Relations.  Vishal introduced a full schedule with three speakers.

Speaker:  Lara: Competent Leadership Guide, Speech Project #10, Inspire Your Audience
Ruth listed the objectives of Lara’s speech project and Vishal gave an introduction.  Lara gave a speech about using the Competent Leadership Guide.  Lara gave an overview of the ten projects in the guide and how the different roles in each meeting can fulfill each project assignment.

Speaker:  David: Why Toastmasters, Why Now? Speech Project #9, Persuade with Power
Samya listed the objectives of David’s speech project.

David shared a story about his first Toastmasters meeting experience and addressed the question of “Why Toastmasters?”  David shared a list of famous toastmasters across professional fields: politics, sports and space exploration.  David noted the diversity of professional experience and international experience within this club and also gave a cost-benefit ratio comparing Toastmasters to other speech clubs.

Speaker:  Randy: The most pleasant and unpleasant sounding words in the world
Aditi listed the objectives of Randy’s speech project and Vishal gave an introduction.
Randy started his speech by saying the names of each person in the club audience.
Randy listed some phrases:
·         Fairly unique
·         With all due respect
·         Shouldn’t of
·         24/7

Randy shared a story about a friend who frequently uses the phrases “at the end of the day” and “basically”.  Randy used pauses to build up suspense in his story.   Randy read a note for his friend and then invited the audience to avoid clichés by creating new phrases:
·         He’s all foam but no beer
·         He’s all sizzle but no steak
·         He’s all candle but no wick

Randy lit a candle and ended his speech with the expression “It is better to light a candle than curse the darkness” and reminded everyone to remember people’s names.
Table Topics:  Aditi was the Table Topics Master.  Aditi asked questions related to Summer, the theme of the meeting.  Suzanne, Barbara, David K., Fernando, Glenn and Ruth shared stories of Summer experiences inspired by senses: sight, sound and touch.

Glenn called on his team of evaluators.

Evaluator #1:  Ruth on Lara’s speech: Competent Leadership Guide
Ruth spoke about how Lara has changed and developed from someone who started out quiet and less willing to speak when first joining this club.  Ruth thought Lara’s word choice could have been better but noted Lara was very enthusiastic.

Evaluator #2: Samya on David’s speech: Why Toastmasters, Why Now?
Samya evaluated David’s speech.  Samya mentioned how David’s presence propelled his speech and that he was persuasive and provided examples of powerful people who are Toastmasters.  Samya spoke about how David brought it back to the people in the room and why we should be here.  Samya noted David’s wonderful closing points: “What’s in it for me?”, “What’s it going to cost me?” it is inexpensive, reminding us our efforts are great.  Samya noted David’s smile and encouraged him to smile more.
